A Guide to Pet Rat Supplies

While some quiver in distaste at the thought of the furry creature in their home, others simply love owning a pet rat.  Supplies that are required in maintaining this pet are really quite minimal; making them an inexpensive pet to own.

Facts about pet rats

First, it should be understood that pet rats are not the same as those which run wild through dark, dank alleyways or in the sewer systems of large cities.  Domesticated rats are those which have been bred in captivity, though they are the same species as wild; descending from the family of brown rats.  The species of domesticated rats have been bred for over a hundred years, and are highly suited for both the world of research and pets due to their intelligence and social nature.  There are many other qualities that make rats great pets; they need very little room, require few supplies, do not need to be exercised, eat very little and are easily trained.

Choosing your rat

Locate a reputable pet shop to find your pet; ideally, one whose employees play with the animals to socialize them for potential owners.  Closely examine the rats for health; do not consider any that seem listless, have any discharge from eyes or nose or have scars or open wounds.  These, along with sneezing, wheezing or diarrhea, indicate illness and are not good choices as a pet.  An ideal choice for a pet will be a rat that is approximately 5 weeks of age, have a shiny coat, be inquisitive and have a friendly disposition.  These young rats may nibble at your fingers when you hold them, and in some cases may even lick your fingers; a sign that they have “chosen” you. Now that you and your pet have agreed to become partners, the next step will be to stock up on a few pet rat supplies to start off right.

Supplies for your pet

One of the great things about pet rats is their simplicity.  A home of their own, some bedding, feeding bowls, water dish and a few toys will be all that is needed besides their food.

Housing:  Because rats are by nature gnawing creatures, it is vital to provide a sanctuary that is chew proof.  An aquarium is the perfect home; providing a draft free environment that is unable to be gnawed upon while giving the pet owner a clear view of the rat’s entertaining activities.  The size of the aquarium will depend on the number of rats; a 5 gallon tank is fine for 2 females or 1 male, though a 15 gallon tank would be even better.

Bedding:  Wood shavings that are derived from hardwood only are the best choice for bedding.  Pine and cedar shavings contain toxins that prove to be damaging to the rat’s health after gnawing on them, and should be avoided at all costs.  About an inch of shavings should blanket the bottom of the aquarium, and should be changed regularly.  Rats like sleeping boxes; any non-toxic container around the house will do or you can purchase a commercially made box.

Dishes:  A food dish should be heavy and easy to clean.  Water tube dispensers are best for drinking to avoid spillage.

Toys:  Exercise wheels, untreated wood blocks, chew sticks, and PVC pipes will keep rats, and therefore their owners, entertained for hours.

Food:  Commercially prepared pellets specifically designed for rats is the best diet.  They will also enjoy people food, but avoid fatty or junk foods.  Fresh fruits and vegetables and grains will be eagerly anticipated foods.

Many people have learned the delights of owning a pet rat.  Supplies needed are few, but rewards are many as the rat is a social creature that enjoys the company of its human.
